GT13E2 EV Burner Technical Specifications
The Alstom GT13E2 is equipped with the Environmental (EV) lean-premix burner system, designed to achieve low-NOx emissions without external diluent injection. The EV burner operates by premixing fuel and air upstream of the combustion zone, creating a homogeneous lean mixture that burns at lower peak flame temperatures. Each GT13E2 combustion chamber typically contains 36 EV burners arranged in an annular configuration.
| Parameter | Specification |
|---|---|
| Burner type | EV lean-premix, annular |
| Quantity per engine | 36 burners (standard configuration) |
| NOx emissions | < 25 vppm @ 15% O2 (dry) |
| CO emissions | < 10 vppm @ 15% O2 |
| Fuel types | Natural gas, distillate oil (dual-fuel capable) |
| Operating temperature | Up to 1,600 C at burner outlet |
| Primary materials | Hastelloy X, Inconel 625, Nimonic 263 |
Common EV Burner Failure Modes
EV burner components are subject to extreme thermal cycling, fuel impurity corrosion, and combustion dynamics. Understanding failure modes helps operators plan proactive maintenance:
- Thermal fatigue cracking: Cracks initiate at burner basket welds and fuel nozzle tips due to repeated start-stop cycles. Inspection interval: every 24,000 operating hours or 400 starts.
- Coking and carbon buildup: Liquid fuel residues accumulate on nozzle inner walls, distorting spray patterns and increasing emissions. More common in dual-fuel units operating extended periods on distillate.
- High-temperature oxidation: Transition pieces and burner baskets lose material through oxidation at metal temperatures above 950 C. TBC (thermal barrier coating) degradation accelerates this process.
- Fuel nozzle erosion: High-velocity fuel impingement wears nozzle orifice edges, changing spray angle and mixture quality. Measure orifice diameter at each major inspection.
- Swirl vane deformation: Thermal creep causes swirl vanes to warp, disrupting the premix airflow pattern and increasing NOx output.
Burner Refurbishment vs. New Manufacturing
ZURN Power offers both new-manufacture and refurbished EV burner options. The decision depends on component condition, urgency, and budget:
| Factor | New Manufacture | Refurbishment |
|---|---|---|
| Lead time | 12-16 weeks | 4-6 weeks |
| Cost (relative) | 100% baseline | 40-60% of new |
| Service life | 48,000 hours (typical) | 24,000-36,000 hours |
| Warranty | 24 months | 12 months |
| Best for | Severely damaged or obsolete parts | Components with repairable wear |
Our refurbishment process includes: incoming NDT inspection (fluorescent penetrant, eddy current), dimensional mapping, TBC strip and recoat, weld repair of cracks, fuel nozzle flow bench testing, and final combustion dynamics verification. All refurbished burners ship with full inspection reports and material certifications.
Quality Assurance & Certifications
All EV burner components are manufactured under our ISO 9001:2015 and AS9100D quality management system. Material certifications per AMS, ASTM, and EN standards are provided with every shipment. Key quality controls include:
- Incoming material verification: Spectrometer analysis (OES) and PMI (Positive Material Identification) on all raw stock
- In-process inspection: CMM dimensional checks at roughing, semi-finishing, and final machining stages
- NDT: Fluorescent penetrant inspection (FPI) on all welded and cast surfaces; radiographic inspection on critical welds
- Flow testing: Fuel nozzles undergo air-flow bench testing to verify spray pattern uniformity and discharge coefficient
- Documentation: Each burner ships with material certs, inspection reports, dimensional records, and conformity certificate
